The Zen Monk

“There once was a wise Zen monk who lived deep in the woods. People traveled from far and wide to see him. He refused no one. One day a young reporter decided to write the story of the wise man, so he paid the monk a visit. The reporter started with this question, ‘Of all the people who come to see you, which do you prefer, rich people or poor people? ‘Rich people,” said the monk without hesitating. This surprised the reporter, who was expecting an evasive Zen answer about everyone being different yet equal. ‘Why rich people?’ ‘Because,’ said the monk, ‘they already know that money won’t make them happy.'”
